Turn your volume down before starting, especially with headphones. Tones start at 20% of full scale; raise the slider only if you can't hear anything.
Left and right use a stereo panner, so a tone in the wrong ear means the headphones or cable are reversed, not the test. In the sweep, small speakers typically go silent below ~80-100 Hz and most adults stop hearing somewhere between 14 and 18 kHz -- both are normal; a dropout in the middle of the range is not.

The left tone plays in my right ear.
The test pans hard left and hard right using the browser's stereo panner, so if the channels are swapped, the headphones are on backwards, a cable is wired in reverse, or a driver setting has swapped them. The test itself isn't the variable.
I hear nothing at all.
Check the OS output device first -- a paired Bluetooth speaker in another room is the classic cause. Then raise the volume slider here; it starts at 20% on purpose. If the page's tab shows a speaker icon in the browser but you hear nothing, the signal is leaving the browser and the problem is downstream.
The sweep goes silent at the low end and again at the high end.
That's normal. Small speakers can't reproduce much below 80-100 Hz, and adult hearing typically rolls off between 14 and 18 kHz. A dropout in the middle of the sweep, or on one side only, is worth investigating.
