The level meter doesn't move at all.
The browser is receiving silence. In order of likelihood: the wrong microphone is selected (use the dropdown), the mic is muted in the operating system or on the headset itself, or another app has exclusive control of it. A meter that never moves is not a browser problem.
Is my voice being recorded or sent anywhere?
No. The stream is analyzed and drawn in your browser. The optional 5-second clip is held in memory in this tab for playback and discarded when you leave; nothing is uploaded.
What level should I aim for?
Normal speech should peak in the 50-80% range. Pinned at 100% means the input gain is too high and you'll clip on calls; barely reaching 10-20% means you'll be quiet -- raise the input volume in the OS sound settings, not in the browser.
It works here but not in Zoom / Teams / Discord.
Then the microphone and the operating system are fine and the problem is that app's own device selection or permissions. Check which input the app has picked; it often differs from the system default.
